The Document Foundation launches LibreOffice 3.3

The Internet, January 25, 2011 – The Document Foundation launches LibreOffice 3.3, the first stable release of the free office suite developed by the community. In less than four months, the number of developers hacking LibreOffice has grown from less than twenty in late September 2010, to well over one hundred today. This has allowed us to release ahead of the aggressive schedule set by the project.Not only does it ship a number of new and original features, LibreOffice 3.3 is also a significant achievement for a number of reasons:

1. the developer community has been able to build their own and independent process, and get up and running in a very short time (with respect to the size of the code base and the project’s strong ambitions);
2. thanks to the high number of new contributors having been attracted into the project, the source code is quickly undergoing a major clean-up to provide a better foundation for future development of LibreOffice;
3. the Windows installer, which is going to impact the largest and most diverse user base, has been integrated into a single build containing all language versions, thus reducing the size for download sites from 75 to 11GB, making it easier for us to deploy new versions more rapidly and lowering the carbon footprint of the entire infrastructure.

Getting help for LibreOffice

I joined the LibreOffice project a few weeks ago and I must say this is a very exciting day ! I am mostly involved in marketing and documentation, but I’m also proposing the following two resources to become official support and self-help channels:

• http://libreoffice.shapado.com – a questions & answers community driven by reputation and voting
• http://www.libreofficeforum.org – forums dedicated to language specific versions of LibreOffice (I monitor the French & Spanish forums there)

The LibreOffice project has a dedicated page listing all available online help resources.

I believe having additional self-help and support communities that complement the exiting OpenOffice.org existing ones is important, as the LibreOffice code-base will inevitably diverge more and more, and as we have more version-specific issues and bugs that can’t be treated equally. Furthermore, having language-specific communities and tools that can be used in your own language is also an important way to advocate LibreOffice in any part of the world – without depending on English-only tools.

Installing LibreOffice in Ubuntu

If you haven’t tried LibreOffice in Ubuntu yet, this would be a good time

If you are using Ubuntu do not download the .deb files for manual installation, there is a PPA repository that has been available for a few weeks now. Follow these instructions to install LibreOffice from the PPA so you get automatic updates. If you are running Ubuntu 11.04 LIbreOffice is already part of the standard packages, just search for libreoffice in your favorite package manager. Keep in mind the PPA shows version 3.3 rc4 as of this writing, however the 3.3 release should be available shortly.

The following is needed and works for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 10.10. Keep in mind a PPA is always considered a third-party application and unfit for production purposes, however LibreOffice is becoming part of Ubuntu officially in the next release, due in April 2011, so the PPA will get a lot of attention and care. Make sure you test this and perhaps wait a few weeks if you intend to use this in 10.04 LTS or 10.10 in any significant way.

Here are the steps, then to install LibreOffice in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or Ubuntu 10.10:
Start a terminal window and issue these commands (you’ll be asked for your password):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install libreoffice

To complete the integration to Ubuntu (Gnome) or Kubuntu (KDE), you will also need to either

sudo apt-get install libreoffice-gnome

or

sudo apt-get install libreoffice-kde

… accordingly.

Filing a bug for LIbreOffice in Ubuntu is easy, I have documented the process here.

Additional language modules, help files and extensions are also available if you search for libreoffice in your package manager.

Frameworks, link share and entrepreneurial investments

So since I have been living here in Cancun I have been involved with this developers meetup where we talk and share impressions and comments around development topics. Things like frameworks, languages, best practices and also just have fun with new applications and discoveries. All these took part on last meetup we had yesterday.

The atendee list was small even if many more verified their assistance. A total of four developers gather, most of them I already knew from previous sessions however a new face showed up to this meetup. Some great applications where shared during our meetup including an application similar to the Illumination software creator, which generate applications for Linux, Windows, OSX, Iphone, Andorid and so on, but a new one called Titanium. The whole toolkit is based on Javascript and then generated into the native language. Quite similar to the Illumination software except is a pygtk generation and flex.

Other topics were circulating including the troubleshooting of a JQuery module for the use inside a site. While some hacking was going on an interesting discussion which I decided to record about the differences between the frameworks and MVC model versus the traditional way of developing web applications.

The discussion was pretty interesting and the comments about Python vs PHP and how MVC can be applied to certain applications. There was also some link sharing including Woopra, an alternative to Google Analytics. Rescuetime.com which acts as a monitor of your time spent in at the workstation and teach you how to save time between the applications you are working at.

There was a small discussion about hosting services and cloud services versus VPS and smaller shared accounts, on price point and also cloud services. From local backup to Carbonite and similar cloud services which I am not very found off. My philosophy on using linux for example has changed the way I percieved hardware and when making a selection on netbooks or laptops I just see a shell to my information that lives on different devices as opposed on planning and saving for just 1 expensive piece of tech.

The last part of the meetup was quite interesting, we change scenery and went to a Wings Army which was a good time to throw some food. We were able to talk about the business side of entrepreneurship. We went from venture capitals in Mexico to a directory of south california investments. He told me his experience with government funding and how corruption brought the whole thing down. Something unfortunately very common in the government.

Eventually going back to stories about how to look for greener pastures and try to refocus the strategy and how to avoid huge ammount of paperwork to get by the funding of the solution. I shared my personal strong critics to the Mexican ‘investors’ being completely missplaced as far as what market capitalization vs monetization and growth. As many would notice, Google, twitter, and even Facebook, monetization was always pushed further and delayed as much as possible, even now at 50+ billion dollars there still not substantial monetization yet investment is now pouring from every angle.

Dream of going away

Yesterday I had an interesting dream about getting a ticket to europe. The dream actually started with me getting on a non fueled poweres smart type of car. Driving behind the airport into a more exclusive area only for the KLM and Air france flights.

To be honest the lounge looked more like a Nike shop meet a theatre with the main exit directly to the aiplane hanger. However I never saw the planes. I went to the ticket desk and ask fort flights and got multiple KLM and Air France flights. The best time was for AF so I’ve just got it and left. After steping out I saw the ticket for 1,205 USD a larger ammount that I had budgetted. Then I wonder why I didn’t get it online and was beating myself about it.

The funny thing is that I went to the KLM site right after waking up to check the flights to Berlin. So I probably won’t  go to Berlin, but I thought it was pretty funny the way I got to play with the idea.

 

Organizing for the new year the FLOSS way

So a good Free Software new year wishes is to start organizing Free software events for this year. There are several events where we can put our community on the map. Each year events such as Document Freedom Day, Software Freedom Day, FLISOL and the multiple FLOSS applications events. My initial thought is to cover them via streaming, the multiple talks in different places and countries makes me impossible to look this as a phisical thing but more as a broadcasting thing. Tunning in on a specific hour to a on-going talk about the relevant event seems like the best thing to start going at it.

Things like an on-going IRC channel for the different “ES” regions that can just connect during that day and have a distributed conversation about the events seems like the best idea. However organizing small events is also something I would like to get involved and see what can be done in that area as well as get involved with networking of geeks in my local area.

Some of the issues is that I am new to the area, also my geek friends are increasing but not at the rate that I would have expect at first. So I would like to have a stronger social network that come together into making more geeky things through the network. Also having some more spare change wouldn’t hurt. Being able to access to university resources, tackle on innovation from a larger userbase like maybe a school or medium company that can get involved into providing a cookout or a location that we can all collaborate on making it better. This remind me of a place like LinuxCabal where in Guadalajara was very very active, this gave us a great position where we can all geekout.

I guess my larger goal is to have that people and have that place to geekout and strenght the geek metropolitan network. Till next time, these events will tell if I made it or not.

Wikipedia 10th anniversary

So today was Wikipedia 10th anniversary celebration world wide. 10 years in the tecnology world is like a whole era, and having a community project such as this has been incredible. Since it caught me by surprise, little I did to have a local celebration of wikipedia celebration. However the list was interesting and there were plenty of events in Mexico. However there were also other activities going on specially in the virtual space. So I did attend the IRC room and the facebook sites as well as some of the hashtags. However some of the interesting things that I did was actually using it. Spending time in the site and the more lesser known projects of the Wikipedia Foundation specially the specialized products.

There are interesting stuff going on on these sites and spending time getting to know it will definitely help you out in the future. Things like WikiNews, WikiSource, Wikiquotes, Wiki Commons and others. I particuarly liked the Wikiversity which is a complete school program full of information for every level.

Things like the Wikibooks is also another specialized site that will provide a whole library of ebooks published under a free license. Is interesting for authors that want to get a book out there for everyone to enjoy.

Wikispecies has also more scientific information and biologist might find it amazing repository of information that could help and they can provide the preservation of quality information about our world and the species living in those ecosystems.

Jimmy finally thanked everyone involved with the project and gave it’s video to the general public and published on the wikimedia site. My biggest quote was a testimony of what I experienced recently with wikipedia and other sites like google:

One of the most important experience with wikipedia was when I was talking with a friend. I remembered an episode from my childhood of Twilight Zone. An obscure episode from my childhood memories that I was chatting about, after doing a search wikipedia had a list of all the episodes and I could rescue the exact episode information …Within minutes I was able to watch Wikipedia again. Thanks Wikipedia for reviving my childhood memories.

Codejam and Development Thursday

So today was a great day, well rather yesterday I guess. I spent a couple of hours late night with a bunch of other developers on a conf call and coding at the same time. This was a great experience coming from the somewhat disbelief of the events that are being undertaken by some of my peers. Don’t get me wrong, I believe the event is a good idea, but having too many events might become a distraction of the real goal. So I started a code jam just to see the difference.

So CodeJam’s big difference is what do you know that you want to share, and what we can do together as a collective. I think that smart people know how to work together, while not so smart people are satisfied by just talking about their individual achievements. So to avoid ending up with a group on the lather I try to come up with a more active group that could provide some insight into the coding development and learn it through the practical documentation.

Since I have a global call conference center at my disposal I tried to use it and start doing development with these couple of guys. The goal was to create at least the basic examples of the framework we were targeting.

The framework we saw was Raphael and Pyjamas. The first one was a Javascript framework for the manipulation of SVG. The second one was a python framework to generate multiple effects through HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Originally it was about Javascript but I think the current form goes beyond it and into new development of things.

We had lots of fun trying to solve the first examples and end up with a great satisfaction about being able to at least start understanding the framework. Unfortunately starting so late make us finish early as well. Not to mention that we just got to install it and configure it. I hope some of the guys stick to it and come up with something good on their own.

During the chit chat we came also with some questioning about the use of IDE, and how vim is very powerful but we need better information on how to use it. Something that I somewhat solved by finding a presentation on the use of VIM and PHP.

The next day was the Development meetup and well it wasn’t as good as I expected but eventually we got stuff out there. At least we shared some good links of projects regarding AppEngine, Javascript’s Frameworks for games and other interesting development of Google Maps. I also showed what we did the night before at the codejam meetup and well we got to talk about how to better organize ourselves. The meeting end up on a great note as we were talking about trying to pull out geeks from the university one of the baristos from the starbucks came and talk to us asking about being a student of one of the colleges I went at the beginning of the week and asking if we could contact them. Which was exactly what I did this monday. I hope that he email me so we can come down to something interesting.

Freaky dreams

So today I slept a lot and I dream a lot, funny, before going to sleep I was talking with a friend about freaky dreams based on the music I play while I sleep. I had this station that plays space-like ambiance, and the music is more like a collection of sounds that sounds very deep. Still the dream came to be really freaky as it seems a bit like inception but horizontal. So instead of being an endless world of dreams withing dreams it was more like a loop of the same dream in paralel worlds. Which I either play or observe the heroes trying to either escape from a city about to be hit by holocaust. From a huge Tsunami hitting new york city-like place in the near future, to a Aeon Flux type of sci-fi world that is about to be destroyed and the bio enhacemnts of the citizens seem to be useless. And also had one that was more of a waterworld with water mines covering the sunlight within the acuatic world.

Whatever the dream was, seems to have a tragic ending with the hero diying or survivng just to watch the destruction and then die alone. Anyway the dreams were freaky because they follow the same path, althought things change, the result was the same. So I guess that the dreams were interesting nevertheless because not everyday I get to dream with sci fi like this. I find it very creative on this worlds with human-like personas interacting, and well I am not a sci fi nerd to be honest, so the fact that I get this is a bit of a surprise.

Anyway the dream eventually vanish and I can’t really remember the details just the fact that they were also very clever and not just a plain story. It was entertaning and even thoght it was scary it was like a concious scary. Like if I am going to die at least will be during the last days of this world. Remember the wish of seen everything as it was being wipped out by the water on that tsunami or going to the surface to try to catch this last scene of infinite bombs just covering the ocean.

Anyway I don’t normally blog about dreams but I guess since I am putting so much effort trying to reconstruct my blog, and I don’t really blog much about myself compared to other topics, I guess I will ink this one out. Maybe later I could value it as it should.

I think the meeting was somewhat productive, personally I think that we have different way of working together. Some volunteers are focused on a top down reeingneering while others work on incremental changes. Without a mediation on this barrier I think both parties will become frustrated and might missinterprate the discussion.

Evernote… tu memoria digital

En otros post he hablado de la memoria digital, aquí le damos seguimiento pero específicamente con una empresa y servicio que se llama Evernote. Su meta es la de poder generar una memoria digital la cual pueda ayudarte en tu vida del día a día. Ya no mas habrá una memoria real? Bueno siempre tendrás tal, pero ahora esta será mas brillante por que tendrás un respaldo digital la cual incluirá vídeo, audio, imágenes, dirección e información que puedas acceder desde cualquier lado.

Entonces que es lo que es, a simple vista parece un editor de texto, mas a delante puedes ver que al poder incluir, vídeo, audio ligas y marcadores. Tiene servicios de OCR a través de tu cámara, lo cual hace que la imagen se convierta en texto ascii y pueda ser rápidamente identificable.

Lo importante es que también al tener móviles con geo-posicionamiento y aplicaciones especificas, se puede llegar a tener nuevos productos que pueden hacer que tu captura digital sea mas cómoda. Eso quiere decir que ya no tienes que guardar todas tus tarjetas de presentación en las conferencias y ahora simplemente tomarle una foto, puedes tagear esa foto y tener información de contexto.

Lo importante sin embargo es que los datos no serán tuyos, algo que Richard Stallman dijo ya algunas semanas, seria interesante que esta innovación pueda estar en tu servidor. Sin embargo aun el mercado de servidores es muy inestable para que tu información dependa de empresas mas pequeñas y si fuera un servidor casero tendrá aún mas problemáticas. Sin embargo esta información sera 100% tuya.

En el futuro estamos pensando en que el móvil se convierta en algo mas intimo y fácil de capturar, la llamada wearable computing o lentes con sensores, camaras web y otras cosas las cuales capten tu mundo, y perciban esa memoria. Con tarjetas SD de 1cm y almacenamiento de hasta 32 GB. Algo similar a 100 hrs de video vga.

Microfono, camara web, y display es todo lo que se necesita al final. Con procesadores mas poderosos y con la nube cada vez mas eficiente, creo que Evernote es un gran intento por empezar a capturar tu memoria digital.

Actualmente me encuentro sincronizando mis discos duros y viendo mis documentos crecer desde el 2001 hasta el 2010. Con 10 años de información completamente útil y consecutiva lo cual quiere decir que si quisiera pudiera reformar mis vivencias con tan solo abrir esos documentos. Imagina aunque todo esto esta disponible  desde cualquier lugar. Desafortunadamente aun el almacenamiento en linea es muy caro y los servidores no están ajustados para almacenamiento. Pero seria interesante tener todos estos documentos en linea listos para usarse.

Seguiremos esperando por encontrar mas y mejores formas de almacenar y capturar nuestra vida.
